Timeline

The final written assessment for all three standards is a report of 1000+ words. The report  must be written in the format of yourself having a conversation with a client.  Each task must be applied to parts of the report.

Task 1

"Introduction"

Start this report by writing an introduction paragraph.  This paragraph has the heading "Introduction".  It reports on the prototype you are required to design and make for a client. Complex techniques required to be used in the construction, Trailing and testing of materials, tools used, techniques and processes and constant feedback to client and client input.  The first paragraph must be a summary of what the report will further expand on.  etc.

Task 2 (Workshop based)

The student determines the suitability of materials and/or components in consideration of the wider social and physical context.  Performance  (when treated, when untreated, finishing with oil, finishing with stain, or other medium, moisture, strength, hardness etc).  Do this task by collecting different types of timber and taking photo's of above tests performed in workshop.

Task 2 b (In library or home)

Feedback to client about tests performed on timber to find suitable material for job.  Will this suit the purpose of the job?  Justify why.  Paste photo's / table into your report that helps your client understand why you selected materials or components.   Are these materials readily available? Any timber defects that can impact the prototype?

e.g.

"Testing and Triallng

"My stakeholder wanted advice selecting appropriate materials for making a surfboard.  I suggested Paulownia but had to justify my decision.  My stakeholder also knew that Balsa is the lightest wood.  In order to justify my decision I collected samples of a variety of local materials.  The table below shows the properties of these timbers and tests I performed in the workshop to justify my decision......................................The photo's below also demonstrates how I performed tests. ............................."

Task 3 (Workshop based and library)

The student determines the suitability of techniques and processes.  In terms of a box make a few sample joints that will be suitable for fit for purpose.  e.g. finger, dovetail, dovetail  Take photos of your work as evidence.  Finisihing techniques - How will you apply paint, stains etc.  Carving - How will you use different carving chisels.  Can you produce a test piece or pieces with photos where you tested and trialed carving techniques.  For a surfboard this may mean demonstrating technique how to chamber, glue, nail, screw, create templates or jigs, marking out etc.

Task 3  b (in library )

The next paragraph in report can look like this:

"Techniques and Processes

I tested various techniques for joining parts of my surfboard.  I found ...............glue to be the best suitable for joining parts.  Gluing alone will make the surfboard to heavy and therefore it must be................I tested a sample and found that it reduced the weight significantly............it also improved................."

Task 4 (workshop and Library)

After testing and trialling tools in the workshop you can write about this in your report.

"Selecting suitable tools for the job

I tested specialized tools for making the ............. I make use of measuring and marking out tools such as ......... for making the ................I also used shaping tools such as ..............making the........ I also used impact tools such as ....................making the.............."

Task 5

"Summary"

The last paragraph of this report is the summary.  Students summarizes all of the component mentioned in the report.  Final photo's can also be presented and text added justifying and explaining what changes have been made.  What client wanted? etc.
